Nature Week at Koobara Kindergarten
One of our Backyard friends, the Rainbow Lorikeet
The rainbow lorikeet is an Australasian parrot.
This brightly coloured parrot lives on the east coast of Australia, eastern Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and many other places.
In Australia, you will find that the rainbow lorikeet lives on the east coast from Queensland to Tasmania.
The lorikeets habitat is rainforest, coastal bush, and woodland areas.
Rainbow lorikeets feed mainly on fruit, pollen, and nectar. At Koobara the lorikeets feed on the pollen and nectar, but also the Casuarina nuts that grow on the trees near the oval.
Rainbow lorikeets travel in flocks wherever trees are flowering. Hundreds of rainbow lorikeets of different species will roost in one tree for the night. They will hang upside down for hours at a time and sometimes sleep on their backs with their feet straight up in the air.
